Cégep à distance: A customizable mode of education chosen by over 14,500 students in Québec! – 3 videos to communicate the uniqueness of Cégep à distance
Montréal, March 30, 2022 – An ever-growing number of Francophone and Anglophone students from the four corners of Québec are choosing the unique education mode of Cégep à distance. In 2020–2021, over 14,500 people enrolled in one or more of the 159 credit courses offered in French and English, for a total of over 26,000 courses taken.
“The sharp increase in the number of students over the last two years shows how much the college-level distance education market likes the flexible, customizable study model offered by Cégep à distance,” said Carole Gaudin, director of Cégep à distance.
Since 1991, the year it received the mandate from the Québec government, Cégep à distance has been the only CEGEP with the key mission of developing and offering college-level distance education in self-directed, asynchronous mode. It provides students with educational materials that include all the course content (self-directed courses), which allows them to study at their own pace, where and when it suits them (asynchronous mode), with the option to enrol and start at any time (custom format, with no cohort). Every learner is guided by a tutor, who supports them in learning the educational concepts and corrects their assignments and evaluations. The evaluations have also been conducted entirely remotely since 2020.
“We’re proud to contribute to the development of Québec society by offering students, Francophone and Anglophone alike, what is often the only mode of education that gives them the flexibility they need to complete their college studies despite personal commitments,” Gaudin added.
Cégep à distance also contributes to the CEGEP graduation rate, because many students take a distance course at the same time as their program in their college of origin, often to avoid having to postpone graduation or to catch up after a delay. Many people who are working or who have an especially busy schedule or who have young children also choose Cégep à distance to start, continue or complete their college education.
To celebrate the adults who choose Cégep à distance, three videos have been produced to mark its 30th anniversary. They can be seen on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efykgilkYC0&list=PLHwXUS_mS89w0H7m_zzCQNTTPmiOaiTwd&index=1 (French audio, English subtitles available).
